In 1821, Governor Thomas Randolph of Virginia named a newly created county after his famous ancestor, the Indian Princess Pocahontas. The Indians called these bountiful hunting grounds the "Endless Mountains." Pocahontas County sent sons to the armies of both sides during the Civil War. In the late summer of 1861, following actions to the west, Pocahontas County suddenly became the front line between the opposing forces. The activity in the area that fall and winter included battles at Cheat Mountain, Bartow and Top of Allegheny.

Pocahontas County is home to 4 public schools, 2 of which are in Marlinton with the remainder within easy driving distance. Higher education is offered by Washington and Lee University, National Business College and Virginia Western Community College, each 70 miles or fewer from town. Pocahontas Memorial Hospital serves local health care needs. Nestled in the Monongahela National Forest, Pocahontas County is a haven of natural beauty.
